Climbing Coaching Services

Coaching Philosophy

Most climbers come to me with goals of getting stronger, building better technique, sending harder grades, and/or recovering from (or preventing) injury. Whether you are seasoned climber looking to improve on an already well-established foundation, or a new climber looking for guidance early on in your climbing journey, I will cater to your individual needs and work with you to identify your strengths and areas to focus on improving.

In all of the above scenarios, what often gets lost or forgotten are the mental aspects of climbing, appropriate planning for rest and recovery, and working on muscle imbalances to target vulnerabilities. I would argue these three areas (mental training, rest, and imbalance in the body) are the main reasons for not sending at hard as you could, and also lead to a far greater risk of injury.

Drawing from 12 years of climbing experience, I will work with you to gain a greater understanding of your climbing on the wall, but also your general approach to climbing and training for climbing in order to assess broader picture issues that might be hindering your progress. We will talk about your preparation, proper fueling, proper warmup, making the most out of each session, and proper recovery and refueling practices. Looking at your lifestyle as a whole is an important aspect of optimizing for success when it comes to getting better or stronger at any movement practice, not just climbing.

Whatever your goals may be, I’m excited to help you get closer to achieving them!

“Why do you seek out a challenging climb? Climbing achievements matter little in the grand scheme of things. They don’t create world peace, send your children through college, or even make you a “better” person. The learning that can take place in the process of your climbing achievements is what matters. Climbing can challenge you to the core, which is valuable and allows you to learn about yourself and expand your possibilities. You dig deep on a climb, gain self-knowledge, and apply that self-knowledge—that power—to any situation. If a climb you expected to be difficult proves to be easy and doesn’t challenge you, then it loses most of its benefit. Remember the importance of feeling challenged.”
